What Is Surrogacy? 

Surrogacy is one of the methods of assisted reproduction in which a woman (surrogate mother) carries the child of a couple who are not able to conceive a child in the usual way. In this method, first the egg and sperm of the infertile couple are fertilized in the laboratory and then, the embryo is transferred to the womb of the surrogate mother.

Renting a womb is recommended for women who have one of the following problems:

• Lack of uterus;
• Uterine anomalies;
• Severe uterine adhesions;
• Thin endometrium;
• Very high or uncontrolled blood pressure or heart diseases; and
• Severe pelvic adhesions.

Who Can Be a Surrogate Mother in Iran?

In order to be a surrogate mother in Iran, you should: 

• Be under 40 years old;
• Be preferably married;
• Not have any chronic disease;
• Be physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy;
• Not have any serious disease that endangers you and the fetus;
• Not have a history of miscarriage;
• Not have hepatitis, HIV, and syphilis;
• Have a normal uterus; etc.  

Cost of Surrogacy in Iran

The cost of surrogacy in Iran is completely negotiable; however, the average cost of renting a womb in Iran is between $12,000 to $15,000 while in U.S. it ranges from $110,000 to $170,000 and in Europe it’s almost £15,000 to £20,000.
